Next Generation Wireless Networks: Requirements and Challenges
DESCRIPTION/ABSTRACT:
Abstract: In the last couple of years we have witnessed a rapid increase in the number and variety of applications for mobile wireless devices. 2G and 3G networks were originally optimized for voice and therefore, the data rates provided by these networks are very limited. The sudden increase in the demand for data traffic and the introduction of more demanding mobile applications along with an increase in the number of users have triggered the need for mobile wireless networks with higher bandwidth and data rates.
Next generation wireless broadband networks promise high data rates for mobile users providing coverage comparable to current 2G and 3G networks. New technologies enjoy a number of new innovations in the areas of advanced antenna systems, enhanced security, mobility features, higher spectral efficiency, and QoS management. Along with the new innovations, come new challenges.
In this talk we first provide a short introduction to next generation wireless networks, discussing the architecture and performance requirements. In particular we will take a close look into two technologies: WiMAX and LTE. We will illustrate some performance analysis and discuss some design challenges and MAC/PHY cross layer optimization techniques.
