Intellectual Property Primer Workshop Details:
This workshop will provide an overview of the various types of intellectual property rights: patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets, and how they can be used to protect your ideas, designs, works, inventions and other types of creative capital.  Also includes a discussion of how such rights arise, how they can be registered and secured, and when and how they can be enforced.  In addition to the foregoing informative presentation, this workshop will discuss and analyze real world examples of how intellectual property rights were used by our guest speakers to leverage growth of their organization.

David Johnson, Achates Power, Inc.
David Johnson is the President & CEO of Achates Power, Inc. He has 20 years of industry experience developing and commercializing high volume, high margin cars and trucks for North America, diesel engines for European passenger cars and military and commercial trucks for markets around the world. He earned an MBA and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University. His professional career began at Ford Motor Company where he led the development and launch of the SuperDuty with an all new diesel engine, the highest volume diesel powered pickup trucks on the market. At Ford, he also led quality improvement activities for the Expedition and Lincoln Navigator earning a JDPower quality award. Mr. Johnson worked in Germany for General Motors where he was Program Manager and Chief Engineer for multiple clean diesel engine programs for Opel, Saab and Renault passenger vehicles. He worked closely with GM’s diesel engine partners, Fiat and Isuzu. At Navistar, he was VP for Strategy and Product Operations for Military and Export markets and served as Program Manager for the new line of Mine-Resistant, Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles that were delivered in record time and record quantities for deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan to better protect US soldiers.

Anton Monk, Entropic
Dr. Anton Monk is responsible for new technology initiatives and standards activities at Entropic. Previously, he led the engineering development of Entropic's coax-based multimedia networking chipset and technology which is now the de facto multimedia networking standard for service providers in the United States. He is CTO of the Multimedia over Coax Alliance and serves on the MoCA Board of Directors. Prior to co-founding Entropic he was involved in the development of cable and satellite integrated circuits at Conexant and ComStream Corporation and was a researcher at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Dr. Monk holds a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, San Diego.

 

Bruce Greenhaus, Entropic
Bruce Greenhaus is currently Vice President, Chief Patent Counsel for Entropic Communications, Inc. and an adjunct professor with Thomas Jefferson School of Law. Mr. Greenhaus is a co-chair of the CommNexus Intellectual Property Special Interest Group (IP SIG). Mr. Greenhaus is also a board member on the board of directors for the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program, a program that is dedicated to assisting people gain access to the legal system, including battered women, children, elderly, immigrants, and others in need of legal services. He is formerly Vice President, Patent Counsel for Qualcomm Incorporated. He is also a past a member of the Board of Directors for the San Diego Intellectual Property Law Association (SDIPLA). He spent five years on the Board. His responsibilities included President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, each position having been performed for one year. His career experience includes working as an electrical engineer and later as a private law firm practitioner.

 

 

Steven Tietsworth, Cooley
Steven Tietsworth is an associate in the Intellectual Property Litigation practice group and a member of the Cooley Godward Litigation department. He joined the firm in 2006 and is resident in the San Diego office. His practice is focused on patent and trademark prosecution and counseling and he holds six U.S. Patents as an inventor. Mr. Tietsworth received a J.D., cum laude, from the University of San Diego School of Law in 2005, and is a member of the Order of the Coif.   He served as the Executive Editor for the San Diego Law Review from 2004-2005 and received numerous awards, including several CALI (AmJur) Excellence Awards for highest class score. From 1988-1990, Mr. Tietsworth attended the University of California, San Diego for graduate studies in Electrical Engineering, Communications Theory and Systems. In 1986, he received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University, Philadelphia and is a member of the Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu Engineering Honor Societies. Mr. Tietsworth is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court, Southern District of California, all California State Courts and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.  He is a member of the State Bar of California, the American Bar Association, the San Diego Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

 

Eli Mansour, Luce
Eli Mansour is a partner with the law firm of Luce Forward and has a diverse transactional practice that includes intellectual property transactions and aviation matters. Mr. Mansour has extensive experience in a wide range of intellectual property transactions with an emphasis on development, protection and licensing of pharmaceuticals, software, technology and related intellectual property. Mr. Mansour has represented clients in a variety of transactional intellectual property matters, including the drafting and negotiating of software, technology and pharmaceutical development, manufacturing, distribution and licensing agreements, drug and device discovery agreements, clinical trials, joint venture agreements, and technology assignment and transfer transactions. Mr. Mansour's past experience as an in-house .com attorney has given him vast exposure to and understanding of legal and business issues facing software start-ups and other technology businesses. Mr. Mansour has worked closely with several of his clients to complete transactions in the United States, India, the U.K., France, Italy and Brazil.
