Qualcomm, Chief Executive Officer & Chairman of the Board
Dr. Paul E. Jacobs is chairman of Qualcomm’s board of directors and the Company’s chief executive officer. A leader in the field of mobile communications for nearly two decades and a key architect of Qualcomm’s strategic vision, Dr. Jacobs’ responsibilities include leadership and oversight of all the Company’s initiatives and operations. Through his technology innovations and advocacy, Dr. Jacobs spearheaded Qualcomm’s efforts to develop and commercialize mobile technology breakthroughs that have contributed significantly to the growth of both the Company and the industry. Important developments which began under Dr. Jacobs include: the first Palm OS®-based smartphone; inclusion of GPS capabilities in mobile phones (which led to the acquisition of SnapTrack™ and Qualcomm's development of gpsOne™ position-
location technology); the Brew® system, which enables over-the-air downloading of applications using digital signatures to ensure the integrity of the content; the business ecosystem that enables Brew developers to engage operators globally and receive payment for their applications; and mirasol®, an advanced reflective display technology.
Following the completion of his Ph.D. in 1989 and a year as a post-doctoral researcher at a French government lab in Toulouse, Dr. Jacobs joined the Company fulltime in 1990 as a development engineer leading the mobile phone digital signal processor software team. Five years later, Dr. Jacobs became vice president and general manager of the combined handset and integrated circuit division, which was subsequently divided into Qualcomm Consumer Products (QCP) and Qualcomm CDMA Technologies, respectively.
In 1996, Dr. Jacobs was named senior vice president of the Company and in 1997, president of QCP. Under Dr. Jacobs, QCP (prior to its sale to Kyocera Wireless in 2000) moved into the No. 2 CDMA handset supplier position in the U.S. In 2000, Dr. Jacobs was named executive vice president of Qualcomm and in 2001, group president of Qualcomm Wireless & Internet (QWI), where he oversaw Qualcomm Technology Licensing, Qualcomm Internet Services, MediaFLO USA Inc. and MediaFLO technology development, Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, Qualcomm Enterprise Services, Qualcomm Government Technologies and Qualcomm Technology & Ventures. As Qualcomm executive vice president, he was also responsible for administering the Company's corporate marketing functions and standards organization. Dr. Jacobs became CEO in July 2005 and was appointed Chairman in 2009.
As an innovative leader of a broad range of technical teams within Qualcomm, Dr. Jacobs has been granted more than 35 patents for his inventions in the areas of wireless technology and devices. Dr. Jacobs chairs the World Economic Forum’s Future of Mobile Communications council, serves on the Board of Directors for A123Systems, and is chairman of the Advisory Board of the University of California, Berkeley, College of Engineering; and the Young President's Organization.
Dr. Jacobs received his bachelor's (1984) and master's (1986) degrees as well as his doctorate (1989) in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and subsequently endowed the Paul and Stacy Jacobs Distinguished Professor of Engineering chair at the school. He is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa, Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi honor societies.
Qualcomm, Executive Vice President and President, Qualcomm CDMA Technologies
Steve Mollenkopf serves as executive vice president and group president of Qualcomm Incorporated, providing critical technical and operational leadership for the Company as well as maintaining oversight of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies (QCT), Qualcomm Internet Services (QIS) and Qualcomm MEMS Technologies (QMT). Mollenkopf is also a member of Qualcomm’s Executive Committee, helping to drive Qualcomm’s overall global strategy.
Prior to his current position, Mollenkopf served as senior vice president of product management for QCT, leading the Cellular Products Group (CPG) team. QCT is the industry’s largest provider of wireless chipset and system software solutions, and offers a broad portfolio of highly integrated solutions for mobile devices and base stations that spans across CDMA2000, UMTS and LTE technologies.
Mollenkopf first joined Qualcomm in 1994 as an engineer, and was a leading contributor to the Globalstar project before joining the QCT team in 1999. Serving in various capacities within QCT, Mollenkopf’s technical and business leadership have been critical to the development and implementation of multiple innovations. Mollenkopf was instrumental in building the Company’s position in the UMTS ecosystem by leading development efforts and establishing critical ecosystem relationships with carriers, device manufacturers and infrastructure vendors.
A published IEEE author, Mollenkopf holds six patents, which include power estimation and measurement, multi-standard transmitter system and wireless communication transceiver technology. He also holds two electrical engineering degrees, including a BSEE from Virginia Tech and an MSEE from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
Qualcomm, Senior Vice President, Corporate Research and Development
Matt Grob is Senior Vice President of Engineering and head of QUALCOMM’s Corporate Research and Development division.
Matt joined Qualcomm in 1991. His contributions include system design, standardization, and project leadership for programs including CDMA data services, the Globalstar satellite based mobile voice and data system, and 1xEV-DO high speed wireless internet access technology. Matt was co-project engineer for the 1xEV-DO program starting in 1997. In 2006 he took the role of head of QUALCOMM’s R&D division.

Matt holds a number of patents in the area of wireless data services and technology and holds a BSEE from Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois as well as an MSEE from Stanford University.

John Jackson has spent almost ten years as an analyst specializing in mobile and wireless device, technology, and business strategies. Mr. Jackson has conceived and built a number of supply and demand-side forecast models. His research focus also includes operator and channel strategies, application development and delivery platforms, network technologies and standards, device manufacturing and distribution strategies, and forecasting. Mr. Jackson maintains a global focus with a specialization in the US market. He has travelled extensively to all regions in service of a global client base.
Before joining CCS Insight, Mr. Jackson was vice president of Yankee Group's Wireless/Mobile Technologies practice, where he conducted and directed research on a range of topics, including devices, infrastructure, regulations and standards. Prior to Yankee Group, he spent two years at Chase Manhattan, and five years at a small research firm focusing on competitive market analysis.
