In this session you will hear from Matt Grob, CTO of Qualcomm, about the technology path his company is taking to maximize the use of spectrum and address the capacity challenge. Attendees will learn how a combination of additional licensed WAN spectrum, extreme cell site densification and high efficiency techniques in wireless communication can provide operators with the capacity that users will demand. Furthermore, Mr. Grob will share how achieving 1000x in capacity will require a change in the wireless ecosystem mindset, a new vision in which networks are planned in a very different way.

Matt Grob is executive vice president of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., and chief technology officer. In this role, he is responsible for the oversight of Qualcomm's technical path, the coordination of R&D activities across the company, and the development of next-generation wireless technologies. He also directs the Company’s broad portfolio of research projects with topics ranging from 3G HetNets to small cells. In addition, Grob leads Qualcomm Research and Qualcomm Corporate Engineering Services, and he is a member of Qualcomm’s executive committee.
Grob joined Qualcomm in 1991 as an engineer. His contributions include system design, standardization and project leadership for programs including the early CDMA data services; the Globalstar satellite based mobile voice and data system and later 1x EV-DO high-speed wireless Internet access technology. His focus on cellular data services led to his assignment as co-project engineer for the HDR (High Data Rate) program starting in 1997. This new high-speed Internet access technology became standardized as 1x EV-DO and was commercialized throughout the world. Innovations and techniques from these programs also helped UMTS’ evolution to HSPA. In 1998, Grob was promoted to lead the Company’s R&D system engineering group and in 2006, he became in charge of Qualcomm Research.
The mission of Qualcomm Research is to push the boundaries of wireless, to innovate, and to explore new services and technologies by focusing on longer-term and often higher-risk projects. Recently, Qualcomm Research efforts have expanded in scale and scope. With offices in Austria, China, England, Germany, India, Korea, and the USA, Qualcomm Research continues to have a strong focus on core cellular WAN technology as well as exciting new areas including 3G HetNets, augmented reality, context awareness, LTE Advanced, LTE Direct and small cells.
Grob holds a Master of Science in electrical engineering from Stanford University and a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Bradley University. He is a member of the IEEE and holds more than 70 patents.
