PROGRAM OVERVIEW: As telephone companies roll out IPTV (Internet Protocol television) systems in competition with successful cable and satellite operators, the quality of content protection has emerged as a critical competitive element. Television and movie content has been subject to enormous threats, ranging from peer-to-peer piracy to the sale of 'bootleg' DVDs. In addition, the theft of cable and satellite service has caused significant losses to network owners, both directly and through a devaluation of their legitimate delivery systems. Video content is increasingly produced, distributed, and delivered in digital formats. This same trend exposes the entire content delivery chain to piracy risks, and new technologies are important to ensure that the revenue model for creating and enjoying content is not compromised. Using techniques that include encryption, video watermarking, and advanced authentication, IPTV systems can be successfully protected and competitive.
