PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
Ever thought about using open source to compliment your proprietary code base? Do the words GNU General Public License (GPL) strike fear in the hearts of your lawyers? Do you know how to manage the risk when your engineers integrate open source with the rest of your product?

The Security SIG along with the San Diego Software Industry Council presents Open Source 360. This event features panelists whose experiences span engineering, law, and business. They will share their real world experiences with open source. The presentation also features tips on how to form your own in-house committee to monitor and manage your usage of open source.

High tech companies today have the option of using open source for the development. This is like being given billions of dollars of software to pick and choose from, however the road has potholes to challenge the imagination. The talk is about five principals of open source development, in particular Linux development, that will avoid some of these potholes and speed the way to a successful product.

PANELISTS:
Steve Bjorg, CTO, MindTouch
Steve Bjorg is CTO and co-founder MindTouch, Inc.  MindTouch is a leading provider of hosted, appliance-based and open source wiki solutions. Prior to founding MindTouch in 2004, he worked in product incubation at Microsoft.

Kevin Cheatham, Patent Counsel & Chair of the Open Source Committee, QUALCOMM

William Lewis, Consultant
William Lewis is a consultant that has more than thirty years of development experience. His background encompasses management, MIS development and embedded systems development for start-up and fortune 500 companies. In recent years he specializes in helping companies to bring Linux based embedded systems to market.

David Snyder, VP of Technology, Commercialization, SAIC
David Snyder's career started as a marketer of decidedly low-tech computer peripheral products in the 1980's.  After several years in product management, marketing management and business development, all for a Japanese manufacturer, he discovered Intellectual Property. After initiating and conducting several licensing deals for his employer, he decided to enter this field full time. He joined SAIC's Technology Commercialization dept in 2000. He now is the VP of Technology, Commercialization. His current work involves identifying, protecting and extracting value from the IP they develop.  Much of SAIC's IP is developed in performance of US Government contracts, but they do have several self-funded programs as well.  He also occasionally teaches their researchers about proper procedures to develop and protect SAIC's IP.
