The Mobile/Carrier SIG Presents...

Next-Generation Cameraphones
Have Handheld Cameras Met Their Match?

In the ever evolving world of mobile technology, there has been a barrier in the convergence of two of the most popular mobile devices, the mobile phone and digital camera, from coming together. The proliferation of miniature cameras in mobile devices has reached an impasse, because of the limited functionality of the front-end optics currently able to fit into the small form-factors of these devices.

New disruptive camera technology is changing all of this and is putting the mobile phone on par with one of its current competitors, the disposable camera. As these technologies improve, it will quite soon challenge the point-and-shoot digital camera for dominance in the consumer market. Rhevision Technology is a local San Diego company that is bringing this new technology to market. Their miniature tunable camera lens modules, based on fluidic lens technology, include the same essential features as digital cameras, such as optical zooming, autofocusing, and tunable field-of-view, in a package for mobile devices.

Our panel of experts discussing this topic include Yuhwa Lo, CTO at Rhevision, who will explain this nascent technology, Terry Lingren, VP of Engineering at Kyocera, who will discuss the affects that such technology will have upon handset makers and what they will be able to offer to their customers in the near future, and John Hess, Data Sales Engineer at Verizon Wireless, who will talk about what new services carriers will be able to provide to consumers based upon this and other emerging mobile phone technologies.

PANELISTS:

Terry Lingren, Vice President of Engineering,
Kyocera Telecommunications Research Corporation
Terry Lingren is the Vice President of engineering for Kyocera Telecommunications Research Corporation (KTRC). He directs the development of advanced technologies for Kyocera's global telecommunications companies. Prior to helping start KTRC in 2003, Mr. Lingren was Vice President of Engineering for Kyocera Wireless Corp. and QUALCOMM's Consumer Products Division, responsible for the design and development of all CDMA wireless products. Mr. Lingren previously was Vice President of Engineering at Amplica Inc., a microwave and RF subassemblies manufacturer, and also held various positions at Hughes Aircraft Company in RF component design, antenna design and subsystem development.

Professor Yuhwa Lo
Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering, UC San Diego
CTO, Rhevision Technology, Inc.

Yuhwa Lo received his PhD in electrical engineering from UC Berkeley in 1987. He was a Member of Technical Staff at Bellcore (now Telcordia) from 1988 to 1990. In 1991, he joined the faculty of School of Electrical Engineering, Cornell University as an Assistant Professor and then became an Associated Professor. He became a professor of ECE Department of UCSD since 1999. Dr. Lo maintained a broad interest in several research areas, including optoelectronic materials and processing, optoelectronic devices, semiconductor lasers, optical MEMS, an more recently microfluidics, biophotonics, nanodevices, and biomedical systems-on-chips. His research is multidisciplinary and involves close collaborations with other academic and industrial groups.

John Hess, Data Sales Engineer
Verizon Wireless

John Hess has been with Verizon Wireless since 2004 in the Data Department as a Data Sales Engineer. Previously, he spent four years working with Hewlett Packard in Rancho Bernardo and four years working with Apple Computer in various sales and support roles - all related to focusing on the development of technology solutions that work in an understandable and usable fashion on the consumer level. He is an expert in the end user experience and on determining which processes will and will not be understandable to the normal consumer profile. John is a graduate of UCLA with a Bachelor’s Degree of Science.
