Wireless Medical Devices

Wireless Medical Devices:

Don't Leave Home Without Them!

You wouldn't leave home without your cell phone, and soon enough, you won't want to leave home without your wireless medical device.  Whether you know someone in medical care, are creating your own wireless solutions, or are in the healthcare field where these devices will soon be more ubiquitous than a cell phone, you need to know what works and what doesn't.  This panel of experts includes leaders from wireless healthcare companies who will describe the challenges they faced in building a wireless communications enabled service delivery platform and the lessons they learned along the way.  A discussion revolving around case studies will be followed by an open forum discussion providing an opportunity for the audience to ask questions and pose problems they may be facing in their own efforts to develop a wireless healthcare solution.

So if you are curious about what's cold and what's hot in wireless medical devices, you won't want to miss this!

PANELISTS

Dr. Matt Banet, Founder, CTO and President
Triage Wireless

Dr. Banet currently serves as President and CTO of Triage Wireless, a San Diego-based medical device company focused on developing a cuffless monitor, called ‘OmniScan’, which measures blood pressure and other vital signs.  Dr. Banet founded Triage in 2004.  In December of this year, Triage intends to pursue FDA 510(k) approval for OmniScan.  In 2000, Dr. Banet co-founded Networkcar and served as CTO and COO. Networkcar emerged as a leader in automotive telematics and successfully developed a state-of-the art wireless, Internet-based platform for monitoring a vehicle's diagnostic condition and location.  In 1995, Dr. Banet co-founded Active Impulse Systems ("AIS") and helped build the company from a business-plan stage to a leader in thin-film metrology. He orchestrated the sale of AIS to Philips Analytical (a division of Philips Electronics) in 1998. Dr. Banet has extensive experience in the fields of intellectual property law, wireless electronics, medical devices, optical signal processing, and semiconductor microelectronics.  He is a licensed U.S. patent agent, and has worked as a patent agent for Fish and Richardson, a leader in intellectual property law. Dr. Banet holds a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from University of California, San Diego.

Larry Dube, Vice President of San Diego Operations
Cardionet

Larry Dubé joined CardioNet in August of 2006 from ZOLL Medical Corporation. At ZOLL, he was responsible for all technical operations, and was instrumental in modernizing the company's factory by automating manufacturing and data collection processes to improve throughput, traceability, and control. He also led the company's Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma programs and implemented a Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), resulting in higher yields, shorter cycle times, reduced inventory levels, and improved profitability. Prior to joining ZOLL, Larry served as Vice President of Suntron Corporation's Northeast Operations and as a General Manager at Sanmina Corporation. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, earned his M.B.A. from Bentley College, and achieved his APICS-CPIM certification in 1998.

Tom Padrick, VP, Product Development
WaveTec Vision Systems

Tom Padrick joined WaveTec Vision Systems as Vice President of Product Development in June 2006.  Tom has extensive experience in high tech product development in ophthalmic diagnostic and laser technology fields.  Prior to joining WaveTec, Tom was Vice President of Product Development & Clinical Research for Tracey Technologies. At Tracey, Tom was responsible for transitioning a prototype wavefront system based on ray tracing technology into a reliable commercial product.  Prior to Tracey, Tom served as Vice President of Clinical Research/New Products Manager at EyeSys Technologies.  At EyeSys he set up clinical trials to expand the use and understanding of the new field of corneal topography and lead programs evaluating feasibility of new products.  He has also served as Manager of R & D for Emetropix Corporation leading the development of a laser vision correction procedure (laser thermokeratoplasty).  Prior to positions in early stage companies, Tom worked at Sandia National Laboratories conducting basic research in the Laser Physics Research Department.  He received a B.S. with Honors in Chemistry/Physics from Butler University, and a PhD. in Chemistry (Chemical Lasers) from the University of California, Berkeley.  He resides in Seattle (and Laguna Hills) with his wife Patricia.

MODERATOR

Paul Hedtke, Sr. Director Business Development
QUALCOMM Health and Life Sciences

Mr. Hedtke spent 17 years in the aerospace and military electronics industry in positions ranging from engineer, to engineering project management, to product management to business development while working on a wide range of advanced aerospace and military electronics systems R&D projects. Paul joined QUALCOMM in 1998 and has served as project leader on numerous product and business development initiatives.  More recently, he led the development of QUALCOMM’s QConnect “managed data service” offering and developed QUALCOMM’s first health care associated revenue producing business in 2003 when QUALCOMM began providing wireless connectivity services to health care service companies.  He is currently leading a QUALCOMM strategic initiative to bring “health related” services to consumers using the cell phone platform as the primary User Interface to such services.  One of the major challenges to achieving compelling solutions that will be perceived by users as adding value to their lives is to build a user experience that is persuasive and “sticky”.
