The LBS SIG is launching their 2008 season with an event that will explore different, creative ways location based services (LBS) are being used.  We have all heard of LBS, but many have not yet heard about some ways in which our panelists have.  For example, did you know that Congress enacted the MINER Act of 2006 requiring all underground mines in the US to install “state of the art” wireless 2 way communications and electronic tracking systems? Specifics of the law mandated that all personnel’s locations be recorded at the time of an incident and that the tracking and communications be maintained for a period of time post incidence when all power to the mine is shut off.  Another way LBS is currently being used is by hospitals, who are being approached by various Real-Time Location System (RTLS) vendors, each offering their Radio-frequency or Ultrasound-frequency tracking technology. Each tracking technology has its own sweet-spot, and hospitals start wondering how to deal with this confusing technology landscape when there is no standard? Curious to hear about additional ways LBS is being used?
