Captain Mark Kohlheim is an Information Professional (IP) Officer and a member of the Acquisition Professional (AP) Community and Navy Space Cadre. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Oregon State University in June 1982, and was commissioned via Officers Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island, in July 1985. While assigned to USS Kiska (AE 35) from September 1986 to March of 1988, he served as Combat Information Center Officer and Electrical Division Officer. He completed two Western Pacific/Indian Ocean deployments, achieving his warfare qualification and designation as a Surface Warfare Officer.
Captain Kohlheim reported to USS Meyerkord (FF 1058) where he served, from March 1988 to September 1989, as Navigator, Gunnery Officer, Administration Officer, and Reserve Coordinator. He completed a Western Pacific deployment and achieved his qualification as Engineering Officer of the Watch. He attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, from October 1989 to September 1992, earning a Masters of Science Degree in Computer Systems Management. After completing Surface Warfare Officer Department Head School in Newport, he reported to USS Flint (AE 32) where he served as Operations Officer, Navigator, and Senior Watch Officer from October 1993 to August 1995. He completed one Western Pacific deployment and achieved qualification as a Tactical Action Officer.
While serving as Operations Officer on USS Coronado (AGF 11), Third Fleet Command Ship, from October 1995 to October 1997, Captain Kohlheim assumed additional responsibilities for operations and maintenance of all C5I systems. He completed six Joint Task Force Exercises, RIMPAC 96, and numerous other fleet exercises.
Captain Kohlheim served as Executive Officer of the Naval Computer and Tele-communications Station, Sicily, from November 1997 to December 1999, supporting combat operations in the former Yugoslavia and Kosovo, and achieved his sub-specialty in telecommunications. At the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific, he served as Deputy Project Director for the Global Command and Control System–Maritime, and also served as acting Executive Officer. In November 2002, he assumed command of the U.S. Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station, Puerto Rico, and, additionally, became Secretary for the Inter-American Naval Telecommunications Network. During his tour, the Command was selected as best communications station in both the Atlantic region (OSCAR Award) and the Navy (CITE Award).
From July 2004 to March 2005, Captain Kohlheim served as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Communications (N6) and as Information Warfare Commander (IWC) for Cruiser Destroyer Group One/Strike Group 15 for the USS Ronald Reagan Strike Group. Following the decommissioning of his Strike Group, he returned to SSC Pacific to serve as the Executive Officer from April 2005 to December 2006. Captain Kohlheim served as the Executive Assistant to the Commander, SPAWAR, prior to reporting as Commanding Officer of SSC Pacific in November 2007.
Captain Kohlheim’s decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (five awards), Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy Achievement Medal (two awards) and various unit and expeditionary awards. He is most proud of his unit and expeditionary awards because they recognize the participation and accomplishment of the “team.”
