Learn Dr. Touré’s Perspective on “The Future is Broadband”

CommNexus is excited to give its members an opportunity to meet Dr. Hamadoun Touré, who heads the ITU – the leading United Nations agency for information and communication technology issues and the global focal point for governments and industry in developing networks and services. At this event, Dr. Touré will share his views on the potential opportunities offered by high-speed broadband networks as well as some of the issues associated with their deployment in sectors such as health, education, energy, emergency communications and transport. Dr. Touré is committed to making the ITU an innovative, forward looking organization adapted to meeting the telecommunications challenges of the future. As mobile devices become smarter and cheaper and internet bandwidth increases as access costs fall, Dr. Touré will reflect on the phenomena of connectivity in which the global population is accessing web-based services wherever and whenever they want.

Doreen Bogdan-Martin
Chief of the Strategic Planning and Membership Department, ITU
Mrs Doreen Bogdan-Martin was appointed the Chief of the Strategic Planning and Membership Department in the General Secretariat as from 1 January 2008. She was previously the Head of the ITU/BDT Regulatory and Market Environment Division and was responsible for the programmes on Regulatory Reform and Economics and Finance. Mrs Bogdan-Martin joined BDT in 1994 as a Policy Analyst, and is a leading authority on regulatory and policy trends worldwide. She was the key architect of the Trends in Telecom Reform reports, the annual regulatory survey and database, and the innovative ITU website, ICT Eye. She is well known in the ICT community for her leading role in the annual ITU Global Symposium for Regulators. She was a member of the BDT management committee and has been a representative on several ITU statutory committees over the years. Before joining ITU, Mrs. Bogdan-Martin worked as a Telecommunications Policy Specialist in the Office of International Affairs of the National Telecommunication and Information Administration (NTIA), US Department of Commerce. She holds a Masters degree in Communications Policy from the School of International Service, American University, in Washington DC. It is the first time that a woman is appointed to the most senior professional level (D2) at ITU. Mrs Bogdan-Martin is married with four children.
Larry Paulson
Former Senior Vice President & General Manager, Nokia
Larry Paulson joined Nokia in 1987. He is formerly the Senior Vice President & General Manager of the Nokia CDMA Business Unit and has served as President of Technophone Corporation, a Nokia owned subsidiary, President of Nokia Product Corporation, another wholly owned subsidiary and Vice President of Americas Business Development. He started in his current role in 1997. Mr. Paulson’s current responsibilities include product roadmaps, business planning, feature strategies and application activities for all Nokia CDMA products worldwide. He has served as a charter member of Nokia Americas Management Board and currently represents Nokia as a member of the CDMA Development Group Leadership Council. Mr. Paulson also represents Nokia as a Mentor Sponsor of CommNexus San Diego and serves on the organization's Board. Mr. Paulson currently lives in Rancho Santa Fe with his wife Gretchen and three children.
Amir Jafri
Chief Operating Officer, West Wireless Health Institute
Amir Jafri is the chief operating officer of the West Wireless Health Institute, where he is responsible for driving its organizational effectiveness across all departments. Jafri will oversee the collaboration between the Institute's clinical and engineering teams to ensure quality control and regulatory adherence of research, development and validation activities. Previously, Mr. Jafri was vice president of strategic programs at Cardinal Health, where he was responsible for identifying and bringing to market new product concepts. He joined Cardinal in 2003 and served in various positions as vice president of business operations, vice president of research and development, and vice president office of the CTO. Prior to joining Cardinal, Mr. Jafri was vice president/general manager for healthcare at Comsys Information Technologies, one of the largest privately held service firms in the U.S. Mr. Jafri has also served as vice president of international marketing and sales for various healthcare device companies and has founded successful startup companies in the areas of healthcare clinical and business services, healthcare enterprise technologies, and software engineering. He has a B.S. with a double major in chemistry and biology, with a minor in history from Houston Baptist University.

Principal, ICT168 Capital, LLC
Jeffrey Belk is a principal in ICT168 Capital, LLC, focused on developing and guiding global growth opportunities in the Information and Communication Technology space. Formerly, Belk spent almost 14 years at Qualcomm, where prior to his departure in early 2008, he was SVP of strategy and market development. Belk is on the board of Peregrine Semiconductor, and is an advisor/investor in numerous tech/wireless companies. From 2000 until 2006, Belk was Qualcomm’s SVP, global marketing, and in 1999-2000, was SVP & GM of Qualcomm Eudora Products. Prior to Qualcomm, Belk spent ten years in the PC industry, primarily with then San Diego based Proxima Corporation. Belk has a BA in Economics from UCSD, and an MBA from UCI.
For nearly 145 years the ITU, based in Geneva, Switzerland, has coordinated the shared global use of the radio spectrum, promoted international cooperation in assigning satellite orbits, worked to improve telecommunication infrastructure in the developing world, established the worldwide standards that foster seamless interconnection of a vast range of communications systems and addressed the technical global challenges of our times such as mitigating climate change and strengthening cybersecurity.
