Semiconductor Opportunities for
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)

A panel of Smart Grid and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) experts will share their insights into new markets and opportunities. The panel will focus on wireless communication technologies required to connect electric, gas and water meters to the Utilities' networks. These technologies must enable high performance, long range, secure, wireless networks that carry data and control information to enable existing application such as meter reading, and future applications such as demand response, when energy consumption can be managed as a function of supply conditions.

PANELISTS:
Ted M. Reguly
Director, Smart Meter and Home Area Network Initiatives,
SDG&E
Ted is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation and integration of a comprehensive smart meter and home area network solution for SDG&E’s operations and customers.  Reguly has been with SDG&E since 1981, holding various positions throughout Electric Generation, Electric and Gas Distribution, Supply Management, and Gas and Electric Customer Service supervision.  He is a registered California Mechanical Engineer and received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from California State University, Long Beach, and an MBA from San Diego State University.  He is an active member of UtilityAMI, OpenAMI and the ZigBee Alliance, and also serves on the board of directions for the utility technology association, Utilimetrics.

George Flammer
Chief Scientist,
Silver Spring Networks
George has more than 20 years of experience in software and hardware development, most recently as Director of Communications Technology at Metricom where he was a key contributor to the design and development of the Ricochet high-speed data radio product and data service. In 1998 George co-founded G3M Corporation and served as its CTO where his primary responsibility was the design and development of the Panthera product line. George joined Rosum in September 2002 as Director of Systems Engineering, where he directed multidisciplinary teams in the development of real-world indoor positioning. George earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and has authored more than 20 domestic and international patents.  George joined Silver Spring Networks in 2006 as VP Engineering and has contributed to all aspects of the architecture, product development, standards development and new product directions.

Under his leadership numerous high volume Asics and components for sensors, metrology and Radio & PLC communications have been developed which were deployed in tens of millions of quantities across many countries in the world. Hartman has worked for the last twenty years for Itron and its predecessors in 5 different design centers in 4 different countries in various capacities ranging from design engineering, project management and engineering management. He holds 5 patents in metrology and communication fields. Prior to his involvement in the metering industry, Hartman worked in the arms industry where he participated in the design and implementation of advance and complex weapon systems. He holds a Bachelors degree, advance engineering degree and master engineering degree from the university of Potchefstroom and Pretoria in South Africa.

MODERATOR:
Roberto Aiello

Roberto is a high technology executive who specializes in wireless communications. He works on standards and new technologies at Itron. He started his career as a Physicist at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and at the Superconducting Super Collider Laboratory. He then worked at Interval Research, Paul Allen's technology incubator, where he lobbied the FCC, US Congress and US Senate to achieve UWB spectrum. He founded two Venture Capital backed semiconductor companies: Fantasma Networks and Staccato Communications, to commercialize products based on UWB, raising more that $100M in Venture Capital funding. In both cases he served as President and CEO, moving to CTO as the companies grew. As part of the UWB industry development, he was a founding member of the IEEE 802.15.3a, IEEE 802.15.4a, and WiMedia Alliance where he also served as BOD member and VP of Technology. He has authored 2 books, 19 patents, and several tens of publications. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Trieste, Italy.
