Today, Korea's vast optical network offers speeds as high as 20Mb per second to 76% of all homes (compared to 4Mbps for 30% of households in the US). About three-fourths of Koreans have cell phones with connection speeds up to 10 times higher than in the States. As the most wired country in the World, Koreans routinely use their cell phones to watch television or their computers to download feature-length movies.
Samsung's primary interest is in identifying technology partners that can contribute innovative features to their products as well as address the challenges that are inherent when converging multiple functions into a single mobile device. [Most notably: power consumption and miniaturization]. Although not limited to the following, some of the areas that Samsung is currently exploring include:
* UV (ultra-violet) Sensors (solar radiation)
* Temperature Sensors (thermometer applications)
* WLAN Modules (Wireless LAN)
* Audio CODEC (Audio Compression/Playback)
* FBAR (U.S. PCS Duplexer)
* RF Transceiver
* Digital Media Broadcasting (DMB)
* Digital Broadcast Video - H (DBV-H)
* Noninvasive Glucose Monitoring
* Heart Rate Sensors
* Pedometer (distance measurement)
