PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
The economic downturn during the year 2001 had an adverse impact on the entire telecom industry. Nevertheless, the "Wireless LAN (WLAN)" segment performed exceedingly well by demonstrating double digit growth figures. WLAN was intended for wireless Ethernet access in private enterprise, SOHO and residential settings but of late, the concept of "public WLAN" has become quite popular. Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) such as MobileStar and Wayport are instrumental in deploying "data hotspots" at airports, convention centers, coffee shops and other frequently traveled venues. While the traditional wireless operators have been largely focused on mobile data services and applications, they have been studying the public wireless LAN opportunity closely. Now that 3G is delayed, is it the right time for operators to focus on WLAN? Who are the WLAN vendors? What are the challenges for the public WLANs from a carrier's standpoint? Hear industry experts on the topic of "Wireless LAN - Opportunity or Threat for Wireless Operators."
